Leading the SPC class in 2021
With COVID in the way, 2021 started as wild as 2020 ended. Online classes may not be what we are all used to, but that isn't going to stop us from fighting for our degrees. This class leader isn't planning to give up on his job either! Today, I'll be summarizing what I've learned during my first month as the class leader.
Raise your hand!
It's more important than you'd think! If I hadn't raised my hand when the teacher asked for two volunteers, I wouldn't be here writing this blog! Taking the initiative and not being shy is the core of any leadership position. At least, that's what I've begun to think after these few weeks.
I decided to take the initiative to answer questions in other classes. My teachers often ask questions that end up unanswered. I started raising my hand, even when nobody else does! Even if I'm not sure I have the right answer, aren't we at college to learn? Don't be shy! Even if you're wrong, the teacher won't do any more than correct you and move on.
As I said, I became a class leader because I raised my hand first. Similarly, leaders in many important aspects of life are usually the people who stood up first. Being a class leader or not won't affect your life in any way, but keep this in mind because you could end up leading a multi-million dollar company someday!
Care about your team!
Even if you're confused about the situation or don't have all the information you'd want, don't just shrug when your teammates ask you questions. I had to go out of my way several times to give answers I didn't have! It's a struggle, but it's my duty.
After all, a class leader is not a teacher. There are lots of things we don't know, and we can only ask the teacher. So, be honest and help your team as much as you can. If you can't solve something, tell them you'll ask on their behalf. But never try to guess or evade the problem, or the issues will multiply!
Don't think you're better than the rest!
I want to believe this is common sense! But I've seen some class leaders who thought they were gods among men. So, I can't write this blog post without stressing as much as I can that being the class leader doesn't make you better than anyone in any way!
Being humble will open many doors for you. When you are a tiny class leader at college or high school, humility is a matter of etiquette. But when you are a leader of something huge, it is vital. You'll want your team to feel they are working with someone at their level, not with a sort of evil overlord who mistreats them.
In my opinion, being a class leader is very useful as practice for leading in the future. What I have learned and will learn in this class will help me when I start my own company. I'm sure of that, and I hope this post has helped you too.
